20th CENTURY After having freed itself from the heavy hand of opera, Italian organ music became impregnated toward the end of the 19th century with the fascinating universe of timbres offered by newly conceived instruments. 19th CENTURY Collecting and ordering this anthology of pastorales has been like embarking on a journey–by carriage, of course–through the provinces of nineteenth-century Italy. In the background, churches and theatres blend to create an unmistakable landscape of sound, a summary of images evoking this period of Italian organ music. It is a voyage undertaken for the purpose of gathering together the emotions of a new ferment which was sweeping through the peninsula. This new fashion, uniting the musical traditions of Christmas with a new romantic sentiment, led musicians to mix classical and folk elements, high brow and low, in order to give the music a language of universal comprehensibility. A sky on a starry night, pierced by the traditional comet, painted on a backdrop hung behind the wings, assures that the nocturnal magic of Christmas lives on despite the contradiction (exemplary for the period) between nature and representation. Equally irresolvable is the contradiction between the sound of the organ and that of the typical instruments of the Christmas tradition (unequivocal model of the pastorale genre), but this contradiction is resolved by the need to reiterate the Good Tidings each year in the right setting in order to restore its message of wonder and simplicity. And so I think the best way to listen to these pieces is to imagine a series of stories or tableaus or miniatures which bear witness and discreetly provide us with a view of Italy from that time, slowly scratched with a quill on thick and yellow paper. 17th and 18th CENTURY The organ "pastorale", a characteristic presence at Christmastime, developed as a genre intended to evoke and imitate the repertoire of the zampogne or Italian bagpipes. This intentional imitation, evident in the ostinato repetition of short melodic formulas and in the rocking rhythms of a lullaby, is highlighted in the masterful "Capriccio fatto sopra la Pastorale" (from the Toccate d’intavolatura di cimbalo et organo, libro I, Rome 1637) by Girolamo Frescobaldi, the oldest known composition for organ explicitly denoted as a "Pastorale". In performing on the organ a repertoire derived from that of shepherds, certain reed registers were created which went by such names as "zampogna” or "cornamusa"; G.B. Doni documents their use in his Compendio del Trattato de’ Generi e de’ Modi della Musica, published in Rome in 1635. Though the "pastorale" genre underwent modifications throughout the centuries reflecting changes in musical styles and tastes, it nonetheless remained faithful to the unique characteristics of the original model it set out to imitate: the repertoire of the zampognari.

TACTUS ORGAN MUSIC: Giovanni Morandi - Sonate Per Organo a Quattro Mani

The eight pieces recorded here well exemplify Morandi’s organ production. The Introduzione, Tema, e Variazioni is a reworking of the Sonata III from the II Raccolta di Sonate, published in 1817 by Ricordi. In each variation, Morandi imitates an instrument of the orchestra, in homage to a popular fashion in organ music at the time (though little employed by Morandi himself). In the Introduzione, Tema, Variazioni, e Finale, unlike the previous composition, the composer gives no indications for registration to be used in the single variations, leaving the choice up to the performers. The Sonata, the Sinfonia con l’imitazione della banda militare, the Sinfonia marziale and the Gran Sonata follow the formal design mentioned above, with or without the slow introduction. The Pastorale is comprised of two juxtaposing sections: the first is cantabile and almost lulling, while the second is fast and more rhythmic. Judging from the rubrics placed by Morandi in similar compositions, we might identify the first section with the arrival of the Magi and the shepherds at the manger, while the second expresses their joy in the form of a dance. The Gran Marcia Militare eseguita in Vienna nel giorno natalizio di Francesco Secondo Imperatore is the version for four hands of a march which Morandi also adapted for two hands. It is an example of numerous similar marches reworked for the practice and pleasure of the nuns, but which the composer never published. Among the works cited, the two series of variations, the Sonata, the Sinfonia marziale and the Gran Marcia were expressly written for S. Carlo. As for the other pieces, which apparently lack a precise destination, it is also possible the Morandi planned them for publication, though it is highly unlikely that he would have performed them together with a nun organist (the close physical contact would have been absolutely unacceptable). The performance here is based on the critical edition (Giovanni Morandi, Opere per organo a quattro mani, ed. Gabriele Moroni, Bologna, UtOrpheus, 2005), with the exception of two works (Gran Marcia Militare and Gran Sonata), which are based upon the autograph manuscript.

The main aim in choosing such a varied programme is to offer listeners an excursus through the evolution of both the language and forms used in keyboard music in both the Renaissance and Baroque periods. This highlights the many links between the various composers and their schools of composition, in a period of time, which spans almost two centuries, and an area, which covers much of Europe. Keyboard music developed in the Renaissance along several different lines: in keeping with church music, it took its material from Gregorian plainsong and polyphony. Both sacred and secular music could be tabulated i.e. re-configured for keyboard, so that where original motets or chansons had been used they could now be embellished using diminution, ornaments, elaborated passages, and other devices to make the most of the keyboard's own individual technique. In the same way dances as well as songs all came to be adapted for the keyboard whether their original sources were learned or secular. As well as these adaptations of instrumental and vocal music there were also forms written for the keyboard, such as the ricercare, fantasia, canzona, preludio, intonazione and toccata, all of which were characterised by their use of counterpoint, improvisation and sometimes a combination of the two together.

Frescobaldi’s influence is obvious, in the Pensieri, notably in the use of the principle of variation according to the so-called “cyclic principle”; on the other hand we know that Nigetti had his favourite pupil Casini “memorize” “all music” created by the most important ferrarese – “organist in San Pietro in Rome” –. The Frescobaldi pattern appears at once through the choice of subjects clearly inspired by the vocal and “ricercare” tradition as well as in the limited extent of the pattern within which the 4 voices move, the latter being a peculiar feature of keyboard ricercare and of a vocal conception that can be traced back to the Palestrinian archetype...

These Ventuno Sonate by Alessandro Grazioli are compositions of a simple formal architecture, built upon monothematic bipartite schemes. They are all composed in a single movement, and are characterized by the total absence of development of the theme itself. Grazioli instead relies on the use of variations on the themes, almost as if they were variegated reprises of simple melodies. Thus, while the first part of the musical discourse proceeds from the tonic key to the dominant or its relative major or minor, the second part returns to the original tonic by means of modulations of greater or lesser complexity. Moreover, these works are entirely lacking in indications concerning both organ registration and dynamics. As for the use of the pedal, specific indications are found only in the Sonata n. 12. The aesthetic style and structure of these compositions for organ by Grazioli reflect the musical tastes of the Venetian Settecento.
