Another winning program in SOTA sonics from 2L.  All of Morten Lindberg’s efforts on audio-only Blu-ray + SACD have put the lie to Gordon Holt’s old dictum about the better the sonic fidelity the worse the music on the recording. Seeing that this one opened with the rather staid Holberg Suite of Grieg I at first thought it was not one of the best efforts, but the other pieces are less well-known or not known at all and all thoroughly interesting...audaud.com

TRONDHEIMSOLISTENE - in folk style
In Nordic Melodies we find Grieg in passionate play with folk songs. The work sparkles with harmonies and expression, developing a whole story from just a few short stanzas. The Holberg Suite, loved for its beauty and feared for its challenges, is a fusion of European musical tradition and a genuine Norwegian sound palette. The Trondheim Soloists follow up with two brilliant soloists, Emilia Amper on nyckelharpa and Gjermund Larsen on fiddle, in newly commissioned music characterized by the same energy and tenderness. Wild nature and Nordic light are essential elements of the folk style. This lies at the core of the Trondheim Soloist's soul, a meeting between the musical playfulness and passion.

The Trondheim Soloists are regarded one of the top chamber orchestras in the world. Their DIVERTIMENTI was nominated for the 51st GRAMMY Awards as "Best Small Ensemble", "Best Engineered Album" and "Best Surround Sound Album" in 2008. Now IN FOLK STYLE sets a new standard for the performance of Edvard Grieg's "Suite From Holberg's Time" with the intense musical details revealed in this most spectacular surround sound recording ever made.

The Grieg contributions to the disc are presented very winningly indeed, so much so that comparisons to Grieg: Holberg Suite, Music for Strings - Ruud are very difficult to make as the tempo choices are frequently very similar indeed. The differences in hearing that a listener experiences are primarily down to the size of ensemble used. On BIS, we have a full string section of a symphony orchestra whereas here it is a chamber grouping of less than 20 players! The reduced forces provides for greater clarity and a seeming greater nimbleness (although close listening reveals this to be perception rather than reality) which is very infectious. The downside to such clarity and lightness of touch is that a certain gravitas and patina of sound is missing in comparison to the Bergen version - sample both and then choose, neither account will disappoint. In many ways, providing money is not too much of a consideration, neither set of fill-ups should be missed as these are both superlative discs... sa-cd.net

G.P. Telemann - Ouverture Suites: Carin van Heerden, L'Orfeo Barockorchester

EAC-RIP | WV, IMG+CUE, LOG | 363MB
MP3 LAME VBR-245 V0 | 117MB | SCANS COMPLETE | 20MB
Baroque | Label: CPO | Catalog Number: MDG 319-0538-2

Every release of a recording of Telemann’s orchestral suites reinforces our admiration for his inventiveness and unfailing gift for ingratiating melody. With two projects underway, on Brilliant (modern instruments) and Caro Mitis (period instruments), to record all of the orchestral suites, we are truly living in a Telemann paradise. In the meantime, other companies continue to issue recordings of the orchestral suites at an encouraging pace.
Carin van Heerden, a founding member of L’Orfeo Barockorchester (generally under the leadership of violinist Michi Goigg, who performs here as part of the ensemble), takes on multiple tasks for this recording. Aside from conducting the ensemble, she is soloist in all three suites, joined in the suite for two oboes by ensemble member Wolfgang Day.
The only one of these suites familiar to me is the Overture in A Minor for Recorder and Strings, which has been issued by Brilliant as part of its complete overtures project. Both recordings take a very similar approach to the music, with almost identical timings. The main differences between the two can be set down to the instruments used. The modern instruments of Brilliant’s ensemble produce a brighter and softer sound than L’Orfeo at a higher pitch. L’Orfeo’s playing is just a bit sharper than Brilliant’s group, bringing out the character of the music to a greater extent. Also, because of inclusion of repeated material, L’Orfeo’s “Ouverture” lasts almost twice as long.
There is some doubt as to what Telemann meant by his designation of “flute pastorelle” for the E♭ Suite. Van Heerden chose the quarflöte because its “rustical character conveys itself particularly well in the range of the flat keys.” This suite has been recorded before, by Ensemble Rebel on a Dorian disc. I have not heard it, and it appears to have escaped notice in Fanfare. But I cannot imagine that performance to be any better than the one here. The third suite on this recording is not currently available elsewhere, and may be a recording premiere. All three suites receive lively, colorful performances that should have your toes tapping in no time. If you wish to sample Telemann’s suites, you will find this a good place to start. arkivmusic

Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione op. VIII - Vol. 1

Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione op. VIII - Vol. 2

Arts is proud to offer Vivaldi's masterpieces in an exciting interpretation by one of the leading Italian ensembles performing on original instruments. A refreshing, brilliant and virtuoso performance which is presented by some of the best Italian soloists, such as the violinist Stefano Montanari, the oboist Paolo Grazzi and the harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone, who also conducts the worldwide well-known ensemble Accademia Bizantina.

This recording of "The Four Seasons" and of all other famous concertos of Op.8 is characterized by the utilisation of a large and varied continuo and by an energetic, fanciful and innovating interpretation.
The first six concertos of the collection are offered on volume 1 (47564-8 - "The Four Seasons", "La Tempesta di mare" and "Il Piacere") and the further six concertos, including also the two oboe concertos, on volume 2 (47565-8)
