Peter Dickinson: Complete Solo Organ Works - Jennifer Bate (2009)

Peter Dickinson couldn’t have hoped for a more articulate or persuasive advocate of his solo organ work than Jennifer Bate. The two have enjoyed a long and mutually rewarding relationship in the concert hall, and here Bate interrogates Dickinson’s idiomatically expressive voice – “far from the English choral tradition”- with virtuosic ease to enjoyable effect. Bate finds contrast aplenty in the deliciously ragtime-infused Blue Rose Variations, the hushed serialist-leaning Study in Pianissimo and the compelling concentrated intensity of Paraphrase I. A dozen other works showcase Dickinson’s thoughtful, characterful and multifaceted approach to the organ.

I first came across Gary Karr, when, as a very young record collector, I was given a recording of Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals conducted by Bernstein (BRG 72072). On this 1962 LP Bernstein had deliberately selected some outstanding teenage musicians to play the work and Gary Karr was one of them. In fact he played The Swan normally heard on the cello but here on the double bass and Bernstein was obviously most moved by his performance as he said in his narration on the record. Aged only 19, Karr was already obtaining a uniquely strong, distinctive, lyrical and eloquent sound out of an instrument, which no one was taking seriously. It has been Karr’s obsession to reverse the public’s perception of this heavy, grumbling instrument and he is well on the way. F.J. Berg - Flute Mystery: V. Ashkenazy - Philharmonia Orchestra [SACD Red Book rip]

...Berg’s piece alluding to the mountains is from a score he created for a film with the same title. He depicts mountain panoramas in his own way, and rather than the alpine peaks of some romantic composers, his are the rougher peaks of northern Norway. The Flute Concerto returns to something of the quieter and more contemplative mood of the opening piece.
